Not Your Average Pet
For people interested in small exotic pets like a leopard geckos or uromastyx, caring for one of these creatures isn't exactly conventional knowledge like caring for a dog or cat. With this mini site, PetSmart and National Geographic took the audience to exotic locations where they could learn about the natural habitats of these creatures, then showed them how to recreate those habitats in their homes with products from National Geographic.
Bringing it to Life
Each scene was composited from dozens of photos in order to create the best example of the creature's habitat possible. The whole experience is also responsive, so the same content can be viewed on most devices. Even the parallax effect works on touch devices. We used parallax animation controlled by mouse movements and screen angle to give each of these environments a sense of 3D and bring the audience that much closer to these exotic habitats.
Shifting the angle of the screen or moving your mouse changes the scene’s perspective, creating a 3D effect that makes the experience more immersive.
After experiencing the animal in its natural habitat, users can shop National Geographic products that can help them recreate that habitat for their pet at home.
The project was a great success for both brands and the site took home the 2014 OMMA Web Site Excellence Award as well as the OMMA Members choice Award for Web Site Excellence.
